HMS Ettrick was a River class destroyer and part of the 1st Destroyer Flotilla based at Portsmouth. She was employed in anti-submarine patrols, escorting of merchant ships and defending the Dover Barrage.

On 7th July, 1917 she was hit by a torpedo fired by the German submarine UC-61 when 15 miles south-west of Beachy Head in the English Channel. The front end of the ship was blown off and she was towed back to port, but never repaired. Forty nine of her crew were killed in this incident, including George Coombes.
